Fruits for Diabetics

The best Fruits for Diabetics

Eating fruits is a terrific way of packing your diet with the necessary vitamins, minerals and fibre you need. Often diabetics will shy away from eating fruits because of the sugar content in them. By knowing which contain high levels of sugar and keeping an eye on portion size, you can enjoy fresh fruit.
Keep in mind blood sugar levels can vary from person to person for different foods. Testing blood sugar levels after eating a new fruit will mean you can decide which fruits are right for you. Here are my favorite fruits.
Berries

What’s great about berries is there are so many varieties to choose from. If you don’t like strawberries, there are always blueberries or blackberries to feast on. As the portions are so small, eating a couple of handfuls will give the feeling of eating much more; meaning you’ll feel fuller for longer. You don’t have to just eat them on their own however, they make a great topping or go great with yogurt too. It’s a bonus they contain antioxidants. They protect you from free radicals which can cause harm to your cells and tissue.

Cherries

Considered one of the healthiest fruits, it’s also great if you have a sweet tooth. Packed with vitamin A, one of the most significant benefits for diabetics is it can boost insulin. It’s all down to their red color which is produced by a chemical called anthocyanins, making it a little easier to control your blood sugar levels. Make sure you buy fresh or frozen, as canned varieties often contain added sugar – defeating the purpose of eating cherries.
Kiwi
A great fruit that’s available all year round, it’s rather underestimated in the fruit world, but it holds a significant importance for diabetics in terms of benefits. High in fructose, it doesn’t require insulin to absorb it. It also holds an extremely low glycemic figure (53). Kiwi also has nutrients which help keep eyes and skin healthy – something diabetics often have problems with. If all of this wasn’t enough, they’re also low in fat!

What fruits do you find suitable for diabetics?

Keep your Brain Healthy

Keep your Brain Healthy – Five Simple Ways

Most people think that a healthy body is a physically fit body. After all, the first thing people notice would be our body’s outward appearance. But more than having a slim figure or well defined muscles, what happens inside the body is equally as important as how our muscles look.

A healthy mind is a healthy body. There’s no sense in having a slim figure when there’s no brain behind it. So the next time you’re contemplating on what parts of your body needs enhancement, here are five simple ways of keeping your brain healthy for better overall health.

Never Stop Learning

The brain may not be a muscle but keeping it fit with mental exercises is the best way to keep it functioning optimally. Reading a book, solving a puzzle or constantly learning new things increases mental capacity. It would also be a good idea to keep those brain circuits working by learning new academic pursuits. Everything seems so easy right now that everything could be done with a simple taps on a keyboard. Want to compute how much you’re going to spend in the grocery? Then why not get a pen and piece of paper and do it mentally. If you’re going to spend a few hours in front of the television then why not catch the Discovery or History channel for a change.

Get Some Rest

Even machines require off hours for rest and maintenance. A simple way of keeping our brain rested is by sleeping. Scientific studies have shown that people who were not able to get adequate amounts of sleep. They also found out that stress levels were higher increasing the amount of cortisol in the brain. A tired brain makes it harder to focus and think more clearly.

Be Positive

Stress places a huge toll on the mind and body. It keeps us from thinking correctly and makes making the right decisions more difficult. Stress is a part of our everyday lives and there is no sure-proof way to shield us from this. Staying positive does not eliminate the stressful situation but allows us to make better decisions.Stress causes the body to release a hormone called cortisol. It is released by the adrenal glands and goes to the brain. When stress is managed properly, the hormone is eliminated from the brain quickly. However, prolonged period of stress increases the levels of cortisol in the brain enhancing its negative effects. Cortisol damages and destroys brain cells more specifically the hippocampus, the area responsible for memory.

Live a Healthy Lifestyle

Too much of a good thing is bad and we should always live in moderation. Smoking, drinking and vices only hasten the aging process and increase the amounts of toxins in the body. Toxins located in the blood reach the brain killing irreplaceable brain cells.

Eat Brain Foods
A well nourished brain is a healthy mind. Just like any other part of our body, keeping the flow of nutrients to the brain keeps it mentally sharp and healthy. Mixed nuts, Omega 3 rich foods and blueberries are just some of the best sources of brain nutrients. Avocados, whole grains and eggs also help in keeping your brain healthy. However, chocolates are by far the tastiest treat for our brains. These foods are not only excellent for maintaining optimum brain functioning but also prevents Alzheimer’s, Dementia and other mental disorders.

10 Tips on Losing Your Muffin Top

Tired of that extra skin rising up over your pants? The key to getting flat abs is combining the right exercises with the right nutrition. Here are 10 effective tips for losing your muffin top.
  1. Follow a Healthy Diet. A diet low in calories, fat, and carbohydrates will help you get the flat stomach you desire. Reduce your calorie intake by 500 calories a day and you can lose around 4 pounds a month. Combine this with a low-fat, low-carb diet and you'll see your waistline shrink.
  2. Eat Foods High in Fibre and Protein. Foods high in fibre and rich in protein help you feel fuller longer, lessening the chance that you'll get hungry throughout the day. Fill up with natural whole foods like raw vegetables, brown rice, lean protein, and low-fat dairy.
  3. Drink Lemon Water. Lemon water helps rid your body of toxins and keeps your cells hydrated. In addition, the pectin found in lemons is high in fibre, which helps to reduce hunger cravings.
  4. Avoid Traditional Sit-ups. When performing sit-ups, most people have a hard time doing them correctly. Improper form can result in a more pronounced abdominal muscle. Avoid sit-ups if you want a flat stomach and are not sure what you are doing.
  5. Perform Planks. Plank exercises isolate your inner abdominal muscles, strengthening your core. These exercises will give your waistline a slimmer appearance.
  6. Interval Exercises. Interval exercises where you alternate between high-intensity sprints, cycling, or swimming and low-intensity exercises are a fast way to melt inches off your waist.
  7. Kettle Bell Exercises. Another fast way to lose belly fat is with kettle bell training. Kettle bell exercises combine strength and cardiovascular training to help you lose weight lose and gain muscle.
  8. Jump Rope. Jumping rope is a quick way to blast calories while toning and strengthen your body. Body strengthening exercises help slim your waistline and strengthen your core.

How Do Kiwis Help You Lose Weight?

Kiwis are these small, cute, "furry" things with a funky green body beneath the brown skin. They are super delicious – sweet and yet a little tart; they make a great snack if you just want to nibble on something; and they make an excellent addition or decoration for fruit salads. But that's not all! Kiwis have great health benefits, aid in your beauty regime, and can provide enormous assistance if you are trying to lose weight!
Kiwi (halbiert) by
justusbluemer, on Flickr
First of all, kiwis are low in calories – one fairly large kiwi weighing 76g contains a mere 46 calories! Now you may find this to be too small of a number – you probably won't feel like you've eaten anything… but no! Kiwis, on the other hand, contain lots of fibers which are extremely nutritious and help suppress your appetite. So by eating only 46 calories, you will feel full and not in need of consuming anything else for a long time!

Another huge benefit you get from eating kiwis is stable blood sugar levels because kiwis are a low-glycemic food. If you are trying to lose weight, you should know that if your blood sugar levels are not stable, your body releases insulin which stimulates fat storage.

Kiwis also speed up metabolism which is a huge plus when it comes to weight loss. They contain a digestive enzyme called actinidine which breaks proteins into easily absorbable pieces and therefore makes them faster and easier for your organisms to process.

Carnitine is another substance which aids weight loss and can be found in kiwis. Carnitine literally converts stored fat to calories which you can then burn with exercises.

With all these important qualities, kiwis not only help you reduce your weight but also maintain it for a long time afterwards!

Unlike most diets which deprive your organisms of vital vitamins and minerals, kiwis are extremely beneficial for your health.

First of all they contain vitamin C in quite an abundance. We are generally used to associating this vitamin with citrus fruits such as oranges or lemons. Kiwis, however, actually contain twice the vitamin C of an orange and thus deliver its many benefits in a package of much less calories.

Kiwis are also rich in magnesium which is extremely important for the health and durability of bones and potassium which is vital for the health of your heart. Most diets require the non-consumption of such foods thus having adverse effects on highly important health aspects.

Antioxidants (in the form of flavonoids and carotenoids), which are nature's anti-ageing and health agents are also found in large quantities in kiwis. Instead of spending huge amounts of money on supplements and cosmetics with antioxidants, you can get them the natural way – with kiwis!

Kiwis are true magical workers. On top of being super cute and extra delicious, they help you lose and maintain your weight, they enhance your beauty and they carry multiple benefits for your health…
That's over five birds with a single, green, juicy stone!

An Adult Perspective On Braces

Braces as a teen seem like just one more nail in the coffin of eternal virginity, whereby no one will want to look at you whether as a potential date for a dance, or when it comes to simply being popular. Because you see, popularity means everything at that point. Speaking from experience, when puberty brings on a horribly-sounding breaking voice, your face is covered in swollen sores from acne and you've still not lost that puppy fat, adding braces to your "repertoire" seems like one step too far.

The mechanical type draw more attention to ourselves at a time when we don't want it, at our lowest of lows in terms of appearance. It can feel like the better thing to do is just ignore some of the imperfections because to get braces requires another dent in our confidence and another thing for bullies and peers to pick on. Braces also have, though it is changing, a perception of being something geeks where, which till two years ago, was anything but chic. Even now braces aren't exactly in the same group as large glasses frames and Mad Men-esque slicked back hair which make up the "geek chic fashion".

Unfortunately, like all melodramatic teens, you don't see beyond those teenage years just like you don't see beyond the playground or school. You don't think ahead to university and beyond when you actually are more mature and meet people in clubs or bars, and can actually go about dating or serious relationships. It actually makes sense to get rid of the crooked teeth while going through puberty because you're likely not going to find that special someone at 16 anyway. In my case, I was in an all-boys school so I wasn't going to be able to impress any girls regardless. However, at that age you don't have the perspective to see that as you're living in the now. You're also less likely to take notice of your parent's advice, who would know about these things. Unfortunately for me, my parents were quite lenient with me, so as long as I didn't get into any trouble at school and worked hard, I would be left alone.

It is harder to face up to any dental imperfections especially when you aren't suffering from any pain or discomfort. Braces for adults are frowned upon sometimes because it isn't very common to see. However, they can normally be for a short-term and those who get them often wish they had gone about getting the work done sooner once they see the results. Ideally one would get them when younger so problems and complications don't get worse or arise as teeth form. Also you can get into good habits sooner rather than later and seeing damage occur. It also means you can't get braces on the NHS (UK) if you choose to go about the work once you turn eighteen. When you graduate and have student loans, rent etc. to pay each month, dental costs, unless an emergency, come further down in priorities and will only be put back more and more.

One way to make the jump and push yourself to visit an orthodontist for treatment which you should have seeked out sooner, is to see it as an inevitability that will need to be worked on at some point. With teeth, it becomes more and more complicated as you get older because you consume more which is all potential damage. If you can at least begin making some small changes before you go, such as ensuring you floss, brush twice daily etc., you will look like that much a better patient and your dentist/orthodontist will look at you more positively. They'll also be that bit more optimistic helping you if they know that all their good work will not be reversed and you're taking this seriously. If you make your dental treatment part of a much larger period of self-improvement, you won't be focusing as much on any one aspect; and then, once you've completed these treatments or these new changes have become ingratiated into your lifestyle for a while, you'll feel even better.

Ideally, braces would be fitted as a child though it is more common than one would think that people choose to ignore the need for dental treatment, mainly because they don't want to be picked on. Ironically enough this is the time in life when most of a person's peers also have braces. Fortunately, there is almost always a way to salvage your dental health but it does require making the first step.

Tackling Fatigue

When discussing with colleagues how to deal with the afternoon lull, many suggestions have been made. The overloading of caffeine method, going for a walk, afternoon nap (highly unlikely) and exercise. All will have their benefits somewhere down the line but not all are possible especially as workloads increase. Here we look at a few methods to combat fatigue by focusing on the what we can do as an individual and also some natural stimulants to keep us productive and keep the boss happy.

Exercise

Always the first suggestion made to combat fatigue. When exercise is mentioned don't necessarily jump to conclusions and think a five mile run. With more people working in the office environment compared to manual labor, many people now complain of fatigue. Trying to stretch your limbs can be quite difficult in the modern workplace. On a comfort or lunch break try and go for walk (even if its just round the office). Take your mind off the over inflated workload and focus on something different. More often than not, five minutes away from your workstation can revitalize yourself and ensure you finish the day on a productive note.

Rehydrate

So simple but not everyone considers drinking water to combat fatigue. When we consider that our bodies are mostly made up of water it's no wonder we become less productive when dehydrated. To help battle fatigue suggestions should be made to consuming the recommend daily amount of two liters. Not only will your body feel healthy and fresh (drinking water has been proven to help with weight loss and skin condition) but will maximize output and prepare your body to face the rest of the day.

Health Supplements

Health supplements have been highly recommended to battle afternoon fatigue but with so many on the market it can be difficult to choose. Cinnamon supplements have been proven to help boost energy level as they help to maintain and increase the immune system. In the office environment germs and viruses are easily passed and when that nagging cold can be difficult to shake off it can lead to a lack luster performance when it comes to tackling your workload.

Regular Sleep

Ask yourself why are you tired during the day? What are your sleeping patterns like? Although everyone is individual when it comes to sleep patterns it is recommended that everyone should have around eight hours sleep per day. For many this can be difficult when it comes to midnight feeds and the soundtrack of urban Britain playing so heavily around us, but best efforts should made to ensure we are all sleeping enough. To maintain a healthy sleeping pattern, free yourself from all distractions. This includes checking of the smart phone, laptop, TV, all these technological distractions keep our brains active and don't allow us to switch off and enter relaxed mode.

How's Your Diet?

Naturally some foods will contain more high energy ingredients than others. High caffeine products, although good for short term solutions can actually make you feel more tired went the stimulant has worn off. Try switching the coffee and sugary snacks for juice and a piece of fruit. It may not seem as exhilarating but will stave off any fatigue which may occur later in the day.

We are all different so some tips will not work for everyone, but reassurances can be made that by following just a few of these changes can help tackle and destroy the plague that is the afternoon lull.

The Warning Signs Of Bad Gum Disease

There is a very large proportion of the adult population who develop some form of gum disease. Generally, this is because so many people are not aware of the warning signs of gum disease. If you do not possess the knowledge of how to spot bad gum disease, then it is more likely that you will allow the condition to worsen and this can lead to the loss of teeth.

If you develop gum disease, then it can make it difficult to enjoy your favorite foods and get enough nutrition in your diet. This can exacerbate the dental and gum problems that you have as your body will not be as able to fight off infection and repair itself.  Advanced gum disease also generally causes inflammation and pain, which can make life miserable for you.

On top of that, the aesthetics of gum disease are not pretty. Imagine receding gums, lost teeth and pungent bad breathe and I am sure you will agree that gum disease can affect your self-confidence.

With all this in mind, it is essential that you are able to spot the signs of gum disease early on so that you can treat it before it starts to cause big problems for you.

Finding the Signs of Advanced Gum Disease

There are some signs of gum disease that are easily spotted and do not require the professional expertise of a dentist. These include:

  • Pain
If you are experiencing dental pain, then it is a sure sign that something is going seriously wrong. Any sensitivity or pain should be taken as a sign to high tail it to the dentist for a check-up.

  • Persistent Bad Breath
If you notice that you have an unpleasant taste in your mouth or bad breath even just after brushing, or despite how often you are brushing your teeth, then it is a good indication that there are infected gums.

  • Swollen and Inflamed Gums
Even with early gum disease, such as gingivitis, you are likely to experience some swelling and inflammation of the gums. This can often become very uncomfortable for you – especially after eating certain kinds of foods or brushing your teeth briskly.

  • Bleeding Gums
If you have developed periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease, then you are probably beginning to notice bleeding gums. Bleeding gums are a problem as not only are they painful and messy, but they can make it easier for bacteria to enter the gums and worsen infections.

How To Avoid Back Pain While Working In An Office

Back pain can be horrible and debilitating. When you work in an office setting, what starts out as a little twinge can soon to into a major problem. Most companies are aware of the physical problems caused by working in an office environment and have taken steps to provide office furniture and equipment that is more ergonomic and comfortable.

However, the most comfortable chair or well-designed equipment can only go so far toward providing relief. The best way to rid yourself of back pain in the office is to prevent it. There are steps you can take to stop back pain before it starts.

GET SOME EXTRA SUPPORT

- Buy a lumber pillow to give a little extra support for your lower back. Even with an ergonomically designed chair, the extra firmness will provide added comfort and stability.

- A wrist-supporting gel strip placed in front of your computer keyboard will not only help ease carpal-tunnel symptoms, it keeps your hands in a more comfortable position for keying and takes pressure off of your shoulders and upper back as well.

MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS

If your office is equipped with ergonomically designed office furniture, make sure that it is properly adjusted for your height and reach. The same goes for other office equipment.

- Adjust your monitor so that you can look straight ahead, without tilted your head or holding it at an awkward angle.

- Position your keyboard so that it is at the same level as your hands to avoid hunching over as you type.

- Place your phone so that you won't have to lean forward to answer it.

EXERCISE

You don't have to be in Olympic condition to perform your job, but it helps to strengthen the muscles that support your spine.

- Yoga is good for helping to keep your body properly aligned, and for toning and firming your core and the muscles that support your lower back. It is also good for stress relief.

- Get up and stretch when ever possible. Raise your arms up over your head as high as they will go, then reach forward and down; try to get as close to touching the floor as possible.

- Keep light hand weights in a drawer or under your desk. When ever you start to feel that tension between your shoulders, do a few butterfly presses to work it out. Hold a weight in each hand at chest level, elbows pointed outward, and pull back so that your elbows are pointed behind you and your hands are nearly at your shoulder. You can do these sitting down, and it only takes as little as five presses to loosen you up.

MAINTENANCE

Take care of yourself outside of the office too. Make time for a massage once a week, or at least once a month. Many company health plans now cover chiropractic treatments. Get a regular adjustment to keep everything aligned and free of unnecessary strain.

Guest Author: Casey Haslem is a professional writer and enjoys hiking, the outdoors, and spending time with her family. She is also a big proponent of Bellevue deep tissue massage. For more information visit: MassageTherapyBellevue.com.
