The best Fruits for Diabetics
Eating fruits is a terrific way of packing your diet with the necessary vitamins, minerals and fibre you need. Often diabetics will shy away from eating fruits because of the sugar content in them. By knowing which contain high levels of sugar and keeping an eye on portion size, you can enjoy fresh fruit.
Keep in mind blood sugar levels can vary from person to person for different foods. Testing blood sugar levels after eating a new fruit will mean you can decide which fruits are right for you. Here are my favorite fruits.
Berries
What’s great about berries is there are so many varieties to choose from. If you don’t like strawberries, there are always blueberries or blackberries to feast on. As the portions are so small, eating a couple of handfuls will give the feeling of eating much more; meaning you’ll feel fuller for longer. You don’t have to just eat them on their own however, they make a great topping or go great with yogurt too. It’s a bonus they contain antioxidants. They protect you from free radicals which can cause harm to your cells and tissue.
Cherries
Considered one of the healthiest fruits, it’s also great if you have a sweet tooth. Packed with vitamin A, one of the most significant benefits for diabetics is it can boost insulin. It’s all down to their red color which is produced by a chemical called anthocyanins, making it a little easier to control your blood sugar levels. Make sure you buy fresh or frozen, as canned varieties often contain added sugar – defeating the purpose of eating cherries.

Kiwi
A great fruit that’s available all year round, it’s rather underestimated in the fruit world, but it holds a significant importance for diabetics in terms of benefits. High in fructose, it doesn’t require insulin to absorb it. It also holds an extremely low glycemic figure (53). Kiwi also has nutrients which help keep eyes and skin healthy – something diabetics often have problems with. If all of this wasn’t enough, they’re also low in fat!
